Iceland Adventure: Days 1 & 2

Saturday 9/3: SMF > ORD > KEF

We started off on our Iceland adventure with a mid-morning flight, giving me plenty of time for a full workout before beginning the long travel day. Thanks to Mr. E’s status on United, we were both upgraded to Polaris Business Class for our overnight flight from Chicago to Reykjavik. And he gave me his upgrade to Business Class for the Sac to Chicago portion of the flight, too! During our 4+ hour layover in Chicago, we enjoyed the food and beverage offerings from the Polaris Club, and I had a chance to chat with mom for a bit while we relaxed in the comfy club chairs.

We were able to rearrange our seats on the plane to get two of the Polaris “pods” together and settled in for the 6-hour flight with a couple of movies, some celebratory drinks, and a decent dinner service.

Sunday 9/4: Blue Lagoon, Settling In

We arrived at Keflavik airport at 8:30am and took a taxi to the Blue Lagoon for our soaking time in the warm geothermal waters. Before heading into the lagoon, we checked our bags into the baggage storage area and took a walk around the nearby path through the lava fields. Then we embarked upon our soaking experience, including a couple of beverages and three different facial masks.

We had lunch at the on-site Lava Restaurant (cod for Mr. E, beet salad for me) before getting a bus transfer to Reykjavik. We both dozed for most of that 45-minute journey! We made it to our Reykjavik4you apartment on Bergstaðastræti around 3:30pm.

After we unpacked, Mr. E took a nap while I did a workout. Then we headed out to explore a bit of the nearby area and stock up on some basic food necessities at the Kronan grocery store around the corner from our apartment. We also discovered that we're literally next door to Kattakaffihusið, Iceland’s very first cat cafe!!!

We marveled at the beautiful sunset viewed from our second-floor balcony (too bad we're not a little higher to have a slightly better view) and then turned in early to catch up on sleep.
