SEA Trip Day 5: Reuniting with a Friend

Wednesday, January 18: SIN > BKK

Mr. E and I enjoyed another breakfast with a view of central Singapore before heading to the airport for our mid-day flight to Bangkok. We were on Singapore Airlines for this part of the journey and were lucky to not have anyone sitting in the aisle seat in our row, so we got some extra room. The service and amenities were lovely in our economy plus type seats, and the 2.5 hour flight gave me just enough time to watch The Good House with Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline. How could I resist a movie set in the Boston area? (filmed in Nova Scotia, of course)

When we arrived in Bangkok, we had a smooth passage through customs and immigration and stopped at a Duty Free store for some wine. My friend, A, made the trek to the airport to meet us, and it was wonderful to be reunited with him after 3+ years. He and his spouse, J, and their daughter, Kiddo, have been living in Bangkok since late summer 2021, since J is teaching on a 3-year contract with BASIS International School in the Rama 2 area of Bangkok. More about A and their adventures can be found on his blog Lets Go Kiddo.

A arranged for a Grab (Bangkok version of Lyft) for our transportation from the airport to our hotel, Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse, in the central area of the city. Although I really just wanted to finally unpack and get settled, Mr. E convinced me to wait for a room on a higher floor to be ready. So the three of us instead were able to access the lounge on the 31st floor to continue catching up and have some beverages and snacks as we waited for our room.

Our suite was on the 29th floor and provided great views of the surrounding area. The wait was worth it! We were also impressed by the vase of fresh flowers on the table and the welcome amenity of four different types of chocolate that was delivered to our room as we were getting situated.

After all of our recent travel and delays, we opted to just hang at the hotel lounge rather than going out somewhere for dinner. The food and beverage offerings weren't as extensive or varied as what we had enjoyed in Singapore, but they were still sufficient for all three of us.

We finally stopped chatting and wrapped up for the evening around 9pm. A headed to the BTS to catch a train back towards his neighborhood, I went to bed, and Mr. E took a little time to check out the rooftop lounge above the restaurant on the 32nd floor. He got some great night-time views of the city from that vantage point!

Happy to have come to the airport and meet y’all. It was amazing to catch up and see you both. Since we’re in SEA and plan to be here for at least another 3-5 yrs, we’ll certainly have to make plans to see you again in the region. It was amazing see you again and I’m happy to once again be one of your constant readers!
