The Beginning... (March 9-15)

In early March, the Bay Area started to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic before other areas in California, issuing a shelter-in-place order for a six-county region. We weren't feeling too many of those impacts here in Sac until the week of March 9th. I still had my dentist appointment on Thursday, March 12th, but we were starting to receive notifications of event cancellations, beginning with the California Groundbreakers' Policy & a Pint gathering for that evening.

On Friday, March 13th, I worked from home to attend the webcast Real Estate Education sessions, as the decision had been made the prior week to shift to an online delivery given the emerging guidelines about limiting in-person gatherings and ensuring sufficient physical distance when in a group setting. I met up with S that morning for breakfast at Fox & Goose and also had an afternoon interview at Temple with the agency helping WEAVE to strategize for marketing and branding. Mr. E and I were supposed to see Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo at the Mondavi Center that night, but that show had been cancelled the day before, so instead we each just put in some more time at the gym.

Both of us knew by this time that we'd be working from home for the next few weeks, so we tested out our home office and computer set-ups to figure out how we could both be comfortable with a full-time remote work environment. I got a pedicure on Saturday afternoon in anticipation of our upcoming Honolulu trip (still on at the moment), and Mr. E got his monthly massage. We met up with E & C at Aji Dori for dinner that evening and got a lot of first-hand front-line insight from C about the virus.

On Sunday, March 15th, I got my monthly massage as well, and Mr. E and I got a take-out dinner from Koja on K Street. We didn't realize at the time that this would be the beginning of our daily take-out habit to help support our local eateries as the COVID-19 pandemic spread and the limitations grew more restrictive

However, the cancellations were starting to add up, and my datebook and our big joint calendar on the linen closet door were starting to look quite messy with all of the cross-outs.

Event cancellation tracker to date:
  • Murals conversation series at Sac City College on March 17th
  • Empty Bowls fundraising dinner on March 16th
  • Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo on March 14th
  • California Groundbreakers on March 12th
