The Twelfth Week (June 1-7): Construction, Curfew, Community

Monday, June 1-Wednesday, June 3
We received notification on Monday of upcoming sewer construction and repairs in our driveway, which included not only lots of noise but also a planned water shut-off from 9am-1pm for at least one day. Yikes! Definitely need to plan our morning routines appropriately! My five-pack of stylized black kitty face masks arrived today, which will be perfect for my weekend return to the SSPCA.

Monday also marked implementation of a City of Sacramento curfew from 8pm-5am each day due to the violence and looting that had occurred over the weekend as an unwarranted and unfortunate corollary to the rallies and demonstrations in response to the murder of George Floyd. (see separate post)

I walked to the bank on Tuesday morning to deposit a check and was so saddened to see all of the boarded up businesses along R Street and S Street (see photos in previous post). The divisive and destructive actions of the few resulted in increased police and National Guard presence in downtown Sacramento and detracted from the important and meaningful actions of the BLM movement. A bright spot of the day was arrival of the Bucky Badger cornhole game that Mr. E had ordered a few weeks ago.

Given the high mid-week temperatures, I re-scheduled my Wednesday lunch with EH again but did manage to fit in my morning run while the weather was still decent. I spotted a jack rabbit along the West Sac Riverfront pathway and then spent the rest of the day inside enjoying the a/c.

Thursday, June 4-Sunday, June 7
Mr. E's badger mask arrived [early] on Thursday. He gathered a large veggie harvest from the community garden, and we were able to share the fresh produce with E&C and B&B.

In the afternoon, I took time for my delayed blood donation at the Midtown Vitalant location. With the continued near-100 degree temperature, I actually drove the few blocks to avoid getting overheated prior to the screening process!

The weather cooled down nicely on Friday, as predicted, so I enjoyed my lunch with EH at Mendocino Farms. We were able to eat at the restaurant outside on the patio, which was so lovely. My hummingbird design mask arrived today, but Mr. E and I had to wear the standard medical masks when we went for our appointments with Dr. P in the afternoon.

For my Paw Pantry bagging volunteer time at the SSPCA on Saturday morning, I was able to wear one of my cute new kitty masks. I was so excited to be back at the shelter and giving back to the community again! Our group of four finished the task in under 90 minutes, and then I headed over to the Supercuts in West Sacramento for my first [real] haircut since early March. Yay! So much better! By the afternoon, the City of Sacramento curfew was lifted, and the National Guard was relieved from the extra duty. More good news! E&C came over in the evening for takeout dinner from Cafe Bernardo and Burgers & Brew, and we inaugurated the Bucky Badger cornhole game with several rounds out in the driveway. Such fun!

Sunday morning began a bit earlier than usual for Mr. E, as he had to go get a COVID-19 test as part of his pre-op procedures in anticipation of his upcoming knee surgery. He then spent a couple of hours at the garden, including a Board meeting. We took a longer walk in the afternoon, enjoying the beautiful sunny weather with temperatures in the mid-70s, and noted that Antojo on the corner of 16th and N Streets has finally opened. We grabbed a menu to take home and will plan a visit soon.

Our evening wrapped up with dinner from Orchid Thai out on our patio followed by a game of Rummy 500, which we haven't played for quite a while (Mr. E won!).
