More Wonderful Welly

Saturday 1/5: Walk Wellington, Shopping, Museums
Subway for brekkie with Americanos to go from our hotel. Windy today! Wellington is known for windy conditions, but we'd had great luck so far with minimal gusts up until today. We headed to the bottom of Cuba Street to meet up for the 10am Walk Wellington tour. Our guide, Keith B., led us around for 2.5 hours and provided comprehensive information about the history and development of Welly as we toured through the Civic Centre, Waterfront, and into the Parliament area.

We walked back along Lambton Quay to the Old Bank Arcade for lunch at Smith Grocers -- delicious roasted veggie frittata for me and fish cakes with poached eggs for Mr. E. Then we went our separate ways so that Mr. E could do some more browsing while I got my museum fix. First stop was Academy Galleries, where I bought a print from a local artist showing the view of Oriental Bay coming down from Mt. Victoria -- just as we had done yesterday! I spent about a half hour next at Wellington Museum, including a viewing of the 12-minute documentary about the Wahine disaster, the capsizing of a ferry in the harbour in April 1968. I ended with a stroll through the pop-up village shops along the waterfront near Frank Kitts Park. Mr. E didn't have any luck with shopping, but he did get some great photos of Welly folks enjoying the summer weekend.

We returned to the hotel to do laundry before a return trip to Ombra for cocktails and snacks. Takeaway for dinner in our awesome room-with-a-view and to enjoy our remaining NZ wine. Love this city! We'll definitely be back!!!
