Mahalo Moment: Blue Sky

Over the past two weeks, the temperature has gotten significantly cooler, thanks to a shift in the breeze that has also cleared out the smoky air that we'd been living with for 3+ weeks due to the wildfires up North.

Yesterday morning, as I completed my swim workout with a length on my back, I was struck by the beauty and intensity of the blue sky and realized how long it had been since that blue was visible.

This is a good reminder not to take blue sky for granted but to really appreciate the colour and hue and saturation, since it may not always look that way!!!

Redding & Lassen Volcanic National Park

Mr. E and I took a road trip up north this weekend for our first visit to Lassen Volcanic National Park. We stayed at the lovely new Sheraton (opened 1/18/18) by the Sundial Bridge in Redding and really enjoyed our stay, despite the still smoky conditions.

Friday, August 17-Sunday, August 19
Both of us took the afternoon off on Friday so that we could head out just after 2pm. The drive up I-5 North is easy and straight but rather boring! We made a quick stop on the way and arrived in Redding a bit before 5pm. Conditions were quite warm and smoky when we emerged from the car, so we were glad to get inside quickly. Thanks to Mr. E's status with Sheraton, we received an upgrade to a room on the 3rd floor, including access to the Club Lounge that offered daily drinks & snacks from 4-6pm and breakfast 7-9:30am on weekends. We unpacked a bit, and then I headed to the Lounge with my book while Mr. E went to the spacious Fitness Center for a treadmill workout.

We opted for the "Make a Green Choice" program, which meant no housekeeping in exchange for $10 food credit for our two-night stay. We also got a drink voucher as an "amenity" upon check-in, so for dinner we went next door to Mosaic, a lovely restaurant with great service and very tasty food. Each of us ordered a cocktail, which we enjoyed with our squash blossom appetizer. We had intended to share the dish, but we ended up each having our own because the server realized too late that the gremolata contained onion or garlic, so Mr. E ate the original preparation and I got my own custom plate. Yum!

My entree was a light vegetable-filled pasta, and Mr. E ordered "The Classic" pizza with multiple kinds of meat. After dinner, we strolled across the nearby lit-up Sundial Bridge, designed by famed Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. I've wanted to see this structure ever since I first read about it years ago, so it was great to be so close to the impressive site, which was completed in 2004. We finished off the evening with wine and some TV watching in our room.

Saturday morning, I did a short HIIT workout and a longer yoga practice in the room before we headed to the Lounge for breakfast. Options included eggs & sausage, potatoes, oatmeal, toast, bagels, fruit, and a coffee machine so we could make Americanos. Once we were satisfied, we filled our water bottles at the Fitness Center and hit the road for the drive to Lassen. From our location, the trip was just under one hour to the northwest entrance of the Park. We stopped at some informational placards to help plan our visit and decided to check out the Panoramic Point a bit farther north before continuing into the Park itself. We didn't actually find any sort of panorama in the way we'd been expecting (e.g. view over an expansive vista) but rather just a plantation of pine trees from the 137,000 seedlings that were planted back in 1961.

The smoky conditions we'd experienced in Redding weren't quite so extreme around the Park, but the air certainly wasn't clear, and we know we missed out on some of the natural beauty and views due to the murky air. Once we entered the Park, we started with a short hike (approx. 2 miles) around Manzanita Lake. This was a flat route that skirts the perimeter of the Lake near the Loomis Museum and Ranger Station. Our next stop was the brief (.5 mile) interpretative trail at The Devastated Area, which provided a great pictorial history about the area and how it evolved after the volcanic explosions in May 1915. Our third and final hike was to King's Creek Falls (approx. 3 miles), which included a 500' elevation change and a very steep uphill climb on narrow rock stairs for the return trip. The view of the Falls at the end was worth it, as was the impressive sight along the Cascade Foot Trail while we ascended. However, both of us felt the effects of the smoky air, the warmer-than-expected temperatures, and the altitude (7,000ish feet). We're not used to that elevation, being Sacramento-dwelling flat-landers, and the uphill climb in particular was quite an exertion.

As we headed out of the Park through the Southwest entrance, we stopped at the large new Visitor's Center and grabbed a quick snack, knowing that our drive back to Redding would take about 1.5 hours, through Red Bluff. When we got back to the hotel, we washed our feet and then hit the pool for a bit to cool off and stretch out. Dinner was back at Mosaic, where Mr. E enjoyed the burger and I had the kale salad and side of asparagus. We returned to our room to relax a bit, and then Mr. E went back to the restaurant for a final cocktail after I went to bed.

On Sunday morning, I went out for a 35-minute run along the Sacramento River Trail on the side opposite the hotel, meaning I got to run across the Sundial Bridge both ways. Love that! I also swam laps for 25 minutes, as the pool was a decent length and had a nice straight side along the stairs for me to follow. We again had breakfast in the Lounge and learned that plain eggs for me were available (sausage-less), which was a lovely surprise. Then we packed up, checked out, and embarked on the return drive to Sacramento.

We definitely want to return to Lassen (and Redding) to explore further during a cooler time of year and when there aren't any wildfires burning nearby. The Sheraton was a beautiful and well-appointed facility, and we experienced wonderful, attentive, and welcoming customer service from every staff member in both the hotel and the restaurant. I'm pretty sure we'll be back!

A Series of Unrelated Mahalo Moments

  • Seeing a wild turkey family (parents & babies) wandering around the yards in Campus Commons this morning when driving home from my doctor's appointment
  • The sticker in the women's restroom at Hamel Family Wines: "Please do not flush sanitary products, hopes, or dreams"
  • Noticing a book on the ground outside Beers Books during my long run last Friday, thinking from a distance that I recognized the cover, and realizing that I was correct and it was, indeed, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman, one of the selections we've read as a group as part of our CPCA "One Book" project
  • Voicemail greeting from C and Grammy at work this afternoon

Family Travel & Fundraiser

Friday, July 27-Sunday, July 29: Orlando
At the end of July, Mr. E and I joined others from the S side of the family to celebrate his cousin D's 70th birthday. We all traveled to Orlando (from Sacto, Denver, Chicago) for a surprise party organized by D's daughters. Such a fun long weekend, and D was definitely surprised and very touched to see all of the family and friends at the dinner party. A bunch of us stayed at the same hotel and were thus able to continue the celebration and family time throughout the weekend.

I'm so glad Mr. E and I were able to make the trip, although Orlando in July and a hotel near the Disney and other theme parks are certainly not my ideal destinations -- warm, very humid, and so much traffic!!! Luckily, the hotel itself was resort-style and quite lovely, with a large multi-pool area and some yummy dining options. And I did manage to get out for a run on Saturday morning, following the 5K route through the resort area. Oy! Very sweaty!

We had great travel karma throughout the trip, with no delays at all on Friday for our early-morning flight and meet-up with Mr. E's immediate family at the airport so that we could all carpool to the hotel and the party that evening. And thanks to Mr. E's status on United, I was able to utilize his First Class upgrade for the flight from Sac to Denver.

On our way home, we were delayed due to lots of folks needing extra time and assistance deplaning. However, Mr. E had gotten another upgrade to First Class, which he again bestowed upon me (yay!), and as I chatted with my friendly seatmate, M, he graciously offered to walk me into the United Club in Houston as his guest. That way, Mr. E could use the 1 pass we had on hand, and we didn't need to pay for my access. This was a much nicer way to spend our unexpected 3+ hour layover due to being pushed to a later flight!

For the home-bound flight to Sac, we were pleased to have an Economy Plus row with no one in the middle. And then as we waited, one of the ground crew came on board looking for Mr. E to give him yet another upgrade to First Class. Apparently, due to weather, other flights were delayed on their arrivals to Houston, so folks would miss this flight to Sac, allowing others to upgrade to their seats. In fact, several seats in First Class remained empty, but since I was on a mileage ticket, there was no way to upgrade me as a companion to Mr. E, so I just took his spot and he enjoyed the extra space back in Economy Plus.

Saturday, August 11-Sunday, August 12: Sonoma
This weekend, we headed up to wine country to attend a fundraiser for the UW-Madison's Garding Against Cancer program. The event was hosted at Hamel Family Wines, aka Kohl Center West, and included an afternoon celebration with food, drinks, and Bucky Badger followed by an exclusive 50-person four-course dinner with wine-pairings in the winery tank room. Mr. E and I attended both parts of the event, bringing nicer clothes to change into for the dinner after being very casual in our Wisconsin-wear for the afternoon. It was hot!!! We expected temps in the high 80s, but the late-day sun brought heat in the high 90s, so we were particularly glad to get a break from that during our tour and barrel-tasting in the super-cool caves as a post-celebration, pre-dinner break.

We met some other very nice Badgers and Badger-associated folks during the event, and of course we couldn't leave the winery without purchasing a couple of bottles of wine. The 2015 Isthmus blend adds to our "vertical" of this varietal -- we now have 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. We'll have to be sure to invite some other Badgers to sample the wines with us when we decide to open them all!

Finding a nearby hotel was very challenging for this busy end-of-summer weekend, but we didn't want to have to drive all the way home after the dinner, which ended around 10pm. Mr. E found us an option at Springhill Suites in Napa, where we could use our Marriott points for the one night's stay. Although the hotel wasn't near much of anything else, the venue itself was quite lovely, with a decent-sized and rectangular outdoor pool that opened nice and early at 6am (unusual for hotel pools but a great option if I want to swim laps) and a yummy breakfast buffet with lots of fresh fruit and other healthy options.

On our way home, we stopped at the Vacaville Factory Outlets, where we both had some good shopping karma (five new pairs of sandals for me! all on sale!). We also had amazingly good traffic karma, with no slow-downs at all on the way home, not even on the causeway between Davis and Sacto, which has some sort of congestion about 90% of the time that we pass through.

A wonderful wine-country weekend getaway to support a great cause, and Mr. E is planning to explore other opportunities to get more involved in the future.
