The Second Week (March 23-29): Tennis, Blood Donation, Virtual Ballet

Monday, March 23-Tuesday, March 24
We took advantage of the beautiful weather on Monday evening to grab our tennis rackets and the new tube of tennis balls I had procured at Target to do some volleying on the public courts at Southside Park. What a perfect after-work activity! The temperature was ideal, the court was partially shaded, and we managed to shake of the rustiness of not having played for quite some time. We'll definitely repeat this experience again, and perhaps even try out Pickle Ball as well, since the court is striped for that game, too. Earlier in the day, I enjoyed lunch from Orchid Thai, which provided enough food to set aside another meal for later in the freezer (brown rice and vegetable stir fry with seafood combo).

On Tuesday, I had to postpone a virtual Happy Hour with T and my weekly chat with A due to a migraine. Oof. Not fun, especially with so much additional and extended screen time due to all the Zoom meetings! My daily takeout was again lunch from Mendocino Farms, and Mr. E tried out lunch from Kado's Grill food truck on Capitol Mall. It's nice to see that the Food Trucks are still out and about!

Wednesday, March 25
Happy Birthday to E! We gathered for a virtual Happy Hour at 6pm with E, C, B, B, & M. Mr. E and I enjoyed our Aperol Spritz and sushi appetizer and had dropped off some wine for E earlier in the day. It was great to catch up with B, B, & M as well, since we hadn't talked with them much since the COVID-19 situation started to kick into a higher gear. Later in the evening, I connected with my cousins W & M while Mr. E went off to fetch his takeout dinner (Shepherd's pie) from Fox & Goose.

Thursday, March 26-Friday, March 27
On Thursday, I connected with T in the evening for our postponed virtual Happy Hour, and Mr. E and I got dinner from Burgers & Brew (double burger and fries for Mr. E, portobello burger and Fuji apple salad for me).

Friday afternoon, E and I met up for a later lunch at Bernardo, where we took advantage of the option for cocktails to go as part of our meal. We headed to the Fremont Community Garden to eat and savor the sunshine. In my purchase, I also included the special for a pizza kit in order to hit the minimum amount necessary to get a free loaf of freshly made bread. Yum! The staff was super friendly and helpful and gave me an extra loaf that I then passed on to E to share with C. Mr. E and I used the pizza kit for dinner with lots of additional toppings of our own (veggies, tuna, olives) and supplemented the meal with the leftover Fuji salad from the night before.
Saturday, March 28-Sunday, March 29
Our weekend felt relatively "normal" since we had brunch at home both days and went together to donate blood at Vitalant on Saturday morning. A bit rainy and chilly, but that didn't keep us from being outside at various times. I had a cross-country tech support call with Mom in the afternoon and also got a bunch of little projects done -- set up and made covers for the new dual monitors, planted the mini flowers that E had given me for my birthday, ordered some kitty supplies from Chewy.com, and did multiple loads of laundry.

We had planned to cook dinner this evening, but the mahi mahi wasn't thawed out yet, so instead Mr. E headed out to our local R Street businesses again to pick up a salad for me at Mendocino Farms and a couple of items for himself at Panda Express. Then we settled in on the couch to watch the virtual Sac Ballet video of Soar, one of the new works that was supposed to be premiered this weekend as part of the Homegrown new works performance. Thanks to our DIY set-up with [Little Bucky] tablet computer, HDMI cable to flat screen TV, and Logitech webcam from my Kaplan days, we were able to easily join the Zoom gathering and watch on the TV downstairs instead of just on a small laptop screen. Not quite the same as being there in person, of course, but still surprisingly effective and moving. And we'll be so thrilled to see the live performance sometime in the future once it's rescheduled!

Sunday morning, even though Book Club had been cancelled, I went over to see M for a couple of hours to catch up and work on the French song translations. It was great to just chat in person with a friend! Mom and I had another tech support session to deal with her new printer, which was unfortunately unsuccessful and very frustrating for both of us. Mr. E spent several hours in the garden, mostly to do a bunch of tree trimming. Once he got home in the late afternoon, we went out for a walk and picked up some cookies at Mendocino Farms and fresh naan at Curry Up Now. Dinner at home was grilled mahi mahi, roasted veggies (cauliflower, carrots, brussels sprouts), and mushy peas. Mr. E used his fish for tacos, complemented by a bunch of hot peppers, of course! We also procured some single adult beverages from Market 515 to accompany our meal.

The First Week (March 16-22): Lobster & Croquet

Monday, March 16-Tuesday, March 17
Monday and Tuesday this week felt relatively normal, since Mr. E and I could keep to our usual workout routines with regular trips to and classes at the Capital Athletic Club. However, on Tuesday afternoon, we received a notice from the CAC that the club would be closed beginning the next day and through April 1st. My yoga class had been cancelled because the instructor was sick, so I decided to do a second swim workout that evening, knowing that I wouldn't have access to a pool again for at least two weeks. Unfortunately, this was also the day we learned that the Top of Waikiki was closing temporarily, which was the final deciding factor for us to cancel the Honolulu trip completely.

Wednesday, March 18
I spent the morning making the necessary cancellations with Southwest, the Cat Cafe, and HI5 tours. Mr. E took care of the hotel and the scuba. I was very sad and disappointed but made it through the work day and then had my first virtual Happy Hour that evening with EH, which was actually quite lovely. Several local restaurants were starting to close completely due to the ban on dining in, but quite a few others were remaining open and adapting to a take-out/pick-up/delivery business model. Mr. E had made an offhand comment about having lobster dinner for my birthday since we wouldn't be in Waikiki, so I found Maine Lobster Now online and ordered the Twin Lobster Dinner for Two package for the next day. Lobsters from Maine to California in under 24 hours!!!

Thursday, March 19
Since we had both planned to take vacation for my birthday, we took our time in the morning and headed to the R Street Starbucks for breakfast since I got a free item for my birthday. The FedEx truck with the lobster arrived right before we went out, which was very good timing! Then we worked for the rest of the day and got started on our dinner plans in the late afternoon. We had invited E & C to join us for lobster dinner since the packaged included four lobsters total, and then I had set up a Zoom meeting for a virtual birthday party with a handful of friends and family. We managed to play a few rounds of virtual scattergories, and being able to spend time with E & C in person made the evening quite lovely, despite my disappointment about missing out on our Hawai'i activities.

Friday, March 20-Sunday, March 22
Friday was a pretty typical work day, and the weekend felt a bit odd since we didn't have anything planned as we had expected to be in Honolulu. We did have a Zoom chat with my family on Sunday morning and broke out the croquet set on Sunday evening to play a few matches in the park across the street.

At this point, every event and gathering through the end of April and even into early May has been cancelled:
  • Sacramento Ballet on March 27th
  • Book Club on March 28th
  • Massage on March 30th
  • Michelle Obama on April 1st
  • Austin trip April 2nd-5th
  • Cheetah Fest in Austin on April 4th
  • The Illusionists at Harris Center on April 11th
  • Holes in the Wall concert at Crocker Museum on April 12th
  • Yoga in the Ballroom at Crocker Museum on April 19th
  • SSPCA Doggy Dash on April 25th (rescheduled to June 27th)
  • Raku Glass class at Crocker Museum on April 26th
  • Ballet Social at CAC on May 1st
  • Ballet Gala on May 2nd (rescheduled to August 22nd)
In addition to my strategy of wearing only animal earrings and cat socks for as long as possible, Mr. E and I decided to implement a daily take-out excursion to support our local businesses and to ensure we get out of the house regularly. Here's where we've gone so far:
The blue and white cow outside Mendocino Farms always makes me smile, which is so very necessary during this weird and often-discouraging moment in time!

The Beginning... (March 9-15)

In early March, the Bay Area started to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic before other areas in California, issuing a shelter-in-place order for a six-county region. We weren't feeling too many of those impacts here in Sac until the week of March 9th. I still had my dentist appointment on Thursday, March 12th, but we were starting to receive notifications of event cancellations, beginning with the California Groundbreakers' Policy & a Pint gathering for that evening.

On Friday, March 13th, I worked from home to attend the webcast Real Estate Education sessions, as the decision had been made the prior week to shift to an online delivery given the emerging guidelines about limiting in-person gatherings and ensuring sufficient physical distance when in a group setting. I met up with S that morning for breakfast at Fox & Goose and also had an afternoon interview at Temple with the agency helping WEAVE to strategize for marketing and branding. Mr. E and I were supposed to see Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo at the Mondavi Center that night, but that show had been cancelled the day before, so instead we each just put in some more time at the gym.

Both of us knew by this time that we'd be working from home for the next few weeks, so we tested out our home office and computer set-ups to figure out how we could both be comfortable with a full-time remote work environment. I got a pedicure on Saturday afternoon in anticipation of our upcoming Honolulu trip (still on at the moment), and Mr. E got his monthly massage. We met up with E & C at Aji Dori for dinner that evening and got a lot of first-hand front-line insight from C about the virus.

On Sunday, March 15th, I got my monthly massage as well, and Mr. E and I got a take-out dinner from Koja on K Street. We didn't realize at the time that this would be the beginning of our daily take-out habit to help support our local eateries as the COVID-19 pandemic spread and the limitations grew more restrictive

However, the cancellations were starting to add up, and my datebook and our big joint calendar on the linen closet door were starting to look quite messy with all of the cross-outs.

Event cancellation tracker to date:
  • Murals conversation series at Sac City College on March 17th
  • Empty Bowls fundraising dinner on March 16th
  • Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo on March 14th
  • California Groundbreakers on March 12th

Final [Family] Travel for a Few Months

(playing a bit of catch-up on travel reporting before beginning the COVID-19 blog series)

Wednesday, January 22-Saturday, January 25: Chicago (Mr. E)
Mr. E headed off to Chicago while I stayed home to keep the kitties company. I decorated the house for Lunar New Year with all of the awesome items we've picked up over the years, including the new decorations from last year's sabbatical trip to Honolulu. The weekend also included monthly brunch for me on Saturday morning followed by dinner and Sac Ballet with T that evening. Sunday was book club and SSPCA time, and Mr. E was home late Saturday night so could keep his Sunday afternoon massage appointment.

Thursday, February 13-Monday, February 17: Marshfield (Me)
I made my annual President's Day long weekend trip back east to visit Mom in Marshfield. I had travel delays in both directions, including some extra time on the ground in Minneapolis on the way home in order to de-ice the plane! Mom and I spent a relaxing weekend together and enjoyed seeing the movie Little Women on Saturday afternoon along with two lovely swims on Friday and Sunday.

Friday, March 6-Sunday, March 8: Red Wing, MN (Mr. E)
We typically head to Austin at the end of February or beginning of March to celebrate C's birthday. However, this year, we had already purchased non-refundable tickets to two shows at the Harris Center that conflicted with the timing of a birthday trip, so we instead planned for a belated joint celebration in early April. This allowed Mr. E to be able to join his family in Red Wing, MN, for the opening weekend of his parents' joint photography exhibition at Red Wing Arts Center.

While Mr. E was away, I attended the CalSAE Capital Region Level-Up lunch on Friday and met S for Happy Hour that evening; dropped off a book donation at the Alliance Française on Saturday morning, went to see Chicago with E that afternoon, and finished off the evening with E and C at Aji Dori; and spent Sunday doing chores and errands after losing an hour of sleep due to Daylight Savings Time (grr).

NOTE: Our next trip was supposed to be to Honolulu for my birthday from March 19-23, but that all got cancelled due to COVID-19.
