Singapore: Day 6

Friday, March 28: Chinatown Heritage Center, Massages, Night Boat Tour

I took a walk this morning to check out the Merlion and got caught in an unexpected brief thunderstorm. Oops! I still managed to get some pretty good photos of the river and bridges and Merlion, which apparently doesn't spout water at 6:30am.

The sunrise after the storm was also pretty impressive, and I had some good views from our hotel room during my Zumba and yoga workouts.

We returned to Lime for breakfast followed by coffee in the Club before heading out to the Chinatown Heritage Center. This was a really interesting site to learn more about the history of Chinatown and get a sense of what life was look for the residents of the shophouses. As we returned to the hotel, we did some shopping in search of good Lunar New Year decorations and found a few other items as well, including a beautiful dark blue embroidered pillow cover and a purple Lucky Cat. And Mr. E almost bought some fresh durian...

In the afternoon, we had our massage appointments at the hotel, which were another benefit of our room package. My therapist definitely did some good work on several of my problem areas, and my calves in particular were a bit sore the next day! We had tea in the Club before our 5:30pm pick-up for our night tour.

This started with a boat ride on the Singapore River in one of the traditional bumboats, so I got another view of the Merlion, this time from out in the middle of the Bay.

Then we went to Gardens by the Bay for the evening light and sound show in the Super Tree Grove. I managed to find a perfect spot on part of the artificial lawn area that provided a perfect panorama of the trees and Marina Bay Sands in the background.

Our next and final stop was for the Spectra Sound & Light Show at Marina Bay Sands. We also got to see a K-Pop cover group the T-Dolls recording several dances on the main plaza area outside of the Convention Center!

We were the first of our group dropped off at our hotel, so we were back a bit before 10pm. That's the latest we've been up all week... I read a little before bed while Mr. E went down to Lime for a cocktail and some late-night dinner.

Singapore: Days 4 & 5

Wednesday, March 26: National Gallery + Food Tour

We decided to go to the hotel restaurant Lime for breakfast this morning to check out the full buffet offerings in comparison to the more limited options in the Club, and we finished up with second coffee in the Club as we confirmed our plans for the day.

Our first destination was the National Gallery, which is just across the river and was an easy walk, especially with my awesome sun-shading parasol. I had found a self-guided tour on the web site, so we used that to navigate through the galleries and see some of the highlights of the collection. We ended up on the rooftop deck, which provided a great view of the city skyline along with a multi-colored sculpture that shimmered in the sunlight.

The rooftop also had some lovely flowers, and one of the galleries featured a painting that's part of the Singapore currency.

We were fascinated to learn more about the history of the building, which was originally two separate structures that were united to create the National Gallery. You can still see the dome of one of the buildings coming through the top floor of the new structure.

Our next activity was an afternoon food tour with a local guide, booked through Trip Advisor. I had communicated with the company in advance about my food restrictions, and he did a pretty good job of finding suitable alternatives for me to sample. We visited three different neighborhoods of the city to taste different cuisines -- Malay in Kampong Glam, Indian in Little India, and Chinese in Chinatown. Our final stop was very close to our hotel, which was great since we were quite sweaty and warm after the 3-hour tour and definitely in need of a shower and a rest!

We returned to the Club for dinner and met a friendly couple from Brisbane, R and D. R saw me reading our Lonely Planet guide and remarked on it, so we struck up a conversation that continued during subsequent evening visits to the Club. I think they particularly appreciated that we knew how to pronounce "Melbourne" correctly!

Thursday, March 27: Merlion + Peranakan Museum + Lime Seafood Buffet Dinner

Back to the Club for breakfast and then a morning walk to visit the wonderful Merlion. Our cultural destination for the day was the Peranakan Museum (pronounced like "piranha-ken"), which was featuring a couple of special textile exhibitions. It was fascinating to learn about the art of batik and to see the creations of three generations of women from the same family, each of whom put her own twist on this craft. We also enjoyed seeing the other clothes, jewelry, and home furnishings that are part of the museum's permanent collection.

As a souvenir, we bought the 15cm One Singapore 2024 plate, which came with a display stand and book describing and explaining the meaning of all of the icons on the plate. A great way to learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating country and city!

After some down time in our room, we headed to the bar for cocktails and reading time. The ice block in my Negroni was imprinted with a botanical design, which was a nice decorative touch to the beverage.

Dinner this evening was the seafood buffet at Lime, which was included as part of our room package. We definitely took advantage of the lobster claws and crab legs but decided to opt out of the durian custard dessert.

We finished up the evening with additional beverages and dessert in the Club, with some more chatting with R & D as we wrapped up the day.

Singapore (our re-do / do-over): Days 1-3

Sunday, March 23-Tuesday, March 25: ORD > HND > SIN + Botanic Gardens

Mr. E and I decided to Lyft rather than take the airport bus since we were dressed for our destination weather (e.g. warm and humid) rather than for the lingering Midwest winter and didn't want to be too cold while navigating the public transit option. Although the Polaris Club at O'Hare is currently closed for renovations, we got some extra benefits of premium beverage coupons and special chocolates when we went to the regular Lounge.

This was our first time on an ANA flight, and it was definitely the best Business Class experience we've had so far. The pods were extremely spacious and had privacy doors on the aisles that could be raised for sleeping. The dining menu offered a choice between Japanese or International cuisine. If I'd only known! The Japanese menu was seafood-based, but I'd ordered the usual special Asian vegetarian meal, which definitely wasn't as good as Mr. E's options. Next time...

During the flight, I watched two movies: a fun action / caper film The Experts and a rather silly but sweet Jackie Chan film Panda Plan. After the movies, I slept for about 6 hours and had just enough time for a 35-minute plane workout before we started getting ready for landing. The 15+ hour flight went by quickly!!!

Our flight departed O'Hare at 5:25pm on Sunday, March 23 and landed in Tokyo at 9:40pm on Monday, March 24. This meant we still had enough time for our daily Duolingo practice while we waited for our connecting flight in the ANA Lounge! I also found enough space for my daily yoga practice and took a stroll around the airport to finish off my 10,000 steps for the day as well. And I stocked up on some awesome Lucky Cat souvenirs at the shop near our departure gate!

The equipment for our connecting flight to Singapore was different, so the Business Class pods weren't quite as roomy, but I was still able to stretch out completely. I watched one more movie, the better-than-expected Bad Genius, before trying to snooze a bit more.

We landed a little early in Singapore, at 6:30am  on Tuesday, March 25, and breezed through customs. As part of our hotel room package, we were met by a car at the airport and arrived at the wonderful Park Royal Pickering a little before 8am. Since we'd booked the reservation starting the night before, we were able to get into our room right away to unpack, settle in, workout (me) and nap (Mr. E), and still had time to enjoy breakfast in the Collection Club Lounge before beginning the rest of our first day in Singapore.

Our primary activity for the day was to visit the Singapore Botanic Gardens, aka S'pore Botanic Gardens (that's how it was written on the way finding signs, which we both thought was pretty funny). We decided to take the MRT train and started off at the Chinatown Station, which was just two blocks from our hotel.

However, we then encountered some difficulties when we tried to refill our TransLink card from our previous visit -- the machines in the MRT only take "local" credit and debit cards. Huh??!! We had never encountered that sort of problem before in any public transit system. We learned that we could top off the card by using cash at some machines or potentially use a credit card at a 7-11, so we left the station and tried the 7-11 across the street. Which was closed for 45 minutes for lunch. --!!!-- Luckily, there was a bank nearby with several ATMs, so Mr. E withdrew some cash, which we needed to do for other parts of the trip anyway.

Back down into the station through a different entrance, which gave us access to more machines but none of them accepted cash. --!!!-- Instead, we had to find the ticket office, where unfortunately we encountered a very unpleasant and unhelpful staff person. We were hoping we could both use the same card, so I added $50 to the balance. But then when we asked, she very curtly told us "one card, one person," and there was no way to refund or split what we had just reloaded. So we had to buy a separate card for Mr. E. After the fact, we also realized that there are special cards for tourists that likely would have been more economical overall, but we were so put off by the woman's attitude that we got flustered and were just trying to finish the transaction as quickly as possible.

Once we finally had our cards, the ride to the Gardens was easy and nice and comfortable thanks to the air-conditioned train and stations. Entry to the main parts of the Gardens is free, so we strolled along the pathways around the lake in the direction of the National Orchid Garden (aka NOG), which I wanted to visit. Along the way, we encountered a variety of wildlife, including turtles and a bunch of monitor lizards.

The NOG required an entry fee, but it was definitely worth it to see the amazing range of orchids and have the chance to get some relief from the heat in the Cool House.

We purchased some souvenirs in the NOG gift shop and then headed back out into the main Gardens to catch the MRT back to our hotel. By the time we returned, it was mid afternoon and we were starting to drag a bit. We made time for afternoon tea in the Club and then a nap to help reset our body clocks.

The day finished up with the evening reception in the Club, which includes beer, wine, cocktails, and what would be considered "heavy appetizers," which always provided enough variety and quantity to constitute as our dinner. The shrimp dumplings definitely became a favorite of mine! We were both in bed before 9pm, although Mr. E did stay up a little later than I did to watch some local TV.

More March Evanston Events

I've definitely fallen behind in posting about all of the events in Evanston that we've been enjoying! So here's a quick recap of more March activities, including some photos.

March 13

Film screening at the Block Museum: First Person Plural: New and Rediscovered Trans Documentary Shorts with filmmaker Connor O’Keefe.

March 14

Pi Day at Bennison's Bakery. We pre-ordered three of their special $3.14 mini pies -- blueberry, lemon meringue, and apple. Yum!

Happy Hour at Le Tour. We love the deal on the oysters!

March 15

WCE Revue 2025. We were a bit skeptical of the 8pm start time and 2+ hour runtime, but the show was fabulous! Such fun song parodies, and all for a really great cause.

March 16

Danceworks 2025: signal::transfer at Northwestern Performing Arts Center.

Exhibition at the Block Museum: Woven Being: Art for Zhegagoynak/Chicagoland. This was an amazing show featuring work by several local indigenous artists in a variety of media. I was particularly struck by the woven vases.

March 21

Concert at Evanston History Center: Duo F.A.E. We were both awestruck by this duo of a violinist and pianist performing works by contemporary female composers. Each piece was so powerful and complex, so watching the performers was truly like watching athletes. And how could we resist a concert with a song dedicated to the Notorious RBG?!

March 22

Another condo tour and dinner with M at Trattoria D.O.C. I think their grilled calamari appetizer may be my new favorite go-to meal!
